Built from Experience

Water Membranes Systems was started in 2014 to design and build a small membrane treatment system for Paris, Virginia. Fauquier WSA is the owner.

The project began with a Preliminary Engineering Report prepared by a local consultant, which recommended the installation of a small ultrafiltration (UF) membrane treatment facility. The PER listed a total project budget of $750,000, but Fauquier WSA did not have the budget available for the project.

WSA reached out to Water Membranes Systems to design and submit for approval a membrane treatment system, including the building and all associated appurtenances. WSA had its own construction crew, and working in concert with Water Membranes Systems, was able to build and install the 60-gpm UF membrane system for a total price of $330,000.

Speed. Cost Containment. Collaboration.

The Design/Build approach provides several important advantages over the traditional Design/Bid/Build process.

Faster Project Delivery

The Design/Build approach allows projects to be completed in approximately 40–50% of the time it takes to build a facility using the traditional Design/Bid/Build approach.

Cost Containment

Project budgets are established during the Preliminary Engineering Report phase, and Design/Build pricing is developed below the budgeted numbers whenever possible.

Fewer Change Orders

Because the design is developed by the Design/Build team, potential issues can be identified and addressed before construction, helping minimize change orders.

Collaborative Problem Solving

When issues arise, all parties are part of the project team. Solutions are developed through consensus, helping resolve problems efficiently and eliminating unnecessary finger-pointing between project participants.

Experience Across Multiple Project Scales

Water Membranes Systems has partnered with various Design/Build groups comprised of General Contractors and Engineering Firms to successfully design and build membrane treatment plants at treatment capacities of:

0.5 MGD

Membrane treatment plant design and construction experience at the half-million-gallon-per-day scale.

2 MGD

Experience supporting larger membrane treatment facilities through integrated Design/Build delivery.

4 MGD

Experience designing and building membrane treatment facilities at capacities of four million gallons per day.

Water Membranes Systems has also partnered with municipalities on progressive Design/Build projects that have upgraded and expanded existing membrane plant capacities.

A Better Way to Deliver Water Treatment Projects

By bringing engineering, construction coordination, equipment, and technical expertise together, the Design/Build approach allows project teams to work toward a common objective from the beginning.

For municipalities and water treatment owners, this approach can provide:

  • Faster project delivery

  • Better cost control

  • Fewer change orders

  • Improved coordination

  • Direct communication between project participants

  • Faster resolution of construction and technical issues

  • A single team working toward successful project completion

Water Membranes Systems works alongside owners, municipalities, engineering firms, and General Contractors to deliver membrane treatment projects that are practical, efficient, and built for long-term performance.

One Team. One Goal.

From the initial design through construction, membrane installation, controls implementation, and operational support, Water Membranes Systems brings practical membrane treatment expertise to every stage of the project.

Our Design/Build experience allows us to identify issues early, coordinate solutions efficiently, and keep the project focused on the owner's objectives.
